Over 100 students attended the Chemeketa Community College Open House for Future Teachers on February 22. Students attended with their families, and informational materials were provided in both English and Spanish. The event highlighted the path to becoming a teacher, starting in high school, moving to community college, and graduating from university. Chemeketa provided academic and financial aid advisors to give students specific information. Six partner universities attended the event to explain transfer information, including Western Oregon University, Oregon State University, Pacific University, Corban University, George Fox University and Eastern Oregon University. Students commented that they loved to be able to “shop” the colleges and learn about the specific features of each. The Salem Keizer School District also attended, and announced to the audience of students that they were eager to hire teachers. Several students directly spoke with the director of HR (Steve Nelson), and parents were particularly encouraged to learn of the hiring opportunities for their students.
The event was a culmination of financial support and networking brought about through the TeachOregon Chalkboard initiative, part of the Foundations for a Better Oregon.
