As new teachers begin their career in any district, they are fortunate to find guidance in that first week of employment. However, continued support as new colleagues enter our buildings is vital to not only their success, but also their retention in our schools.
Newberg School District embarked on supporting our new to district licensed staff by partnering each with a current teacher or counselor mentor. This mentoring program calls for current staff to meet with their mentee for an hour a week to connect and discuss their practice.
Our mentoring program serves a dual purpose: it supports our new staff members as well as provides leadership opportunities and recognition for our veteran staff who have so much to offer.
Teachers are intentionally paired with a mentor at the same grade level or content area and counselors are paired with a mentor counselor to honor the need for shared context in this collaboration.
Barb Catts and Eric Fuchs serve as the lead mentors for the primary staff while Dave Sanders and Cassandra Thonstad serve as the lead mentors for the secondary staff. The four lead mentors attend the Oregon Department of Education and New Teacher Center Mentoring Training, sharing the training and support throughout the year to district mentors at leveled district trainings and in building support.
