Recruitment starts as early as middle school, getting students excited about college and teaching, putting particular emphasis on minority students. Universities collaborate with community colleges and school districts to create multiple entry points and smooth transitions between programs and institutions.
Teacher candidates have extended student teaching experiences, co-teaching with skilled master teachers, and working with students from a wide range of cultural, social, and academic backgrounds.
Once hired in PAC school districts, teachers are supported in their initial years of teaching through focused mentorship and professional development.
Grow Your Own
A central goal of the TeachOregon PAC is to prepare teachers who deeply understand the communities in which they teach. The TeachOregon PAC 4-year and 2-year colleges deliver community-based “Grow Your Own Teacher” preparation programs that start with mentoring and support in middle school, and extend to induction and early career mentoring. TeachOregon PAC “Grow Your Own” programs in Woodburn and Tillamook promise to recruit, prepare and support excellent teachers uniquely qualified to help students learn and succeed.
